RC helicopters

A real life helicopter can cost as much as $50,000 and requires a special license to fly. But helicopter enthusiasts can purchase miniature radio-controlled helicopters; special kits can even be purchased that allow hobbyists to build their own RC helicopters.

Identification

RC helicopters are radio-controlled toy helicopters. These helicopters are powered by electricity, gas or nitro and use wood or carbon-fiber blades on the top. A pilot uses a remote control to fly and control the RC helicopter at a distance.

Types

Two types of RC vehicles exist: toys and hobby-grade. The toys are already assembled before they are purchased and can be found at most stores that sell toys, including many mass market stores. Hobby-grade RC helicopters are actually assembled, which is a part of the pleasure of creating the RC helicopter.

Warning

RC helicopters can be dangerous and can cause accidental damage to property if the pilot crashes the helicopter. However, RC support companies offer liability insurance. Pilots can also be careful by routinely inspecting their helicopter, not flying the helicopter too fast and flying the helicopter in an area away from people and property.

Helicopter Basics

Helicopter rotary blades use the principle of the angle of attack, which is where the passing of the rotary blades through air directs the air underneath the blades, creating a force that lifts the blades and the helicopter attached to the blades. The helicopter is controlled by the angle of the rotary blades, which is caused by the swash plate.

Models

Besides the double rotary blade, hobbyists can also construct a coaxial RC helicopter, which uses two double rotary blades. New technology has led to the development of micro RC helicopters, which are so small that they can fit on the palm of one's hand.
